University Malaya, also known as UM, is a public research university located in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It was founded in 1946 and is the oldest and top-ranked university in Malaysia.
The idea to establish a university in Malaysia was proposed during the Ninth Malay Rulers Conference in 1945. The proposal was well-received and the university was officially established the following year as the "University of Malaya". At the time, the university was located in Singapore and offered courses in arts and sciences, medicine, and law.
In 1959, the university was split into two - the University of Malaya in Singapore and the University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur. The latter was officially opened by Malaysia's first prime minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman, and it became an autonomous university with its own academic and administrative powers.
